June Meeting to Elect Board Members

Being a board member doesn't have to be a huge time commitment. Contribute your energies on projects that match your skills and interests and help make the decisions that make Portland's smallest neighborhood the city's best kept secret.

We're looking for new board members who want to make a difference and build Bridgeton's capacity to take action to move forward our priorities.

Upcoming Geotechnical Drilling on Bridgeton Road

To keep the levees accredited within FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program (see the Levee Accreditation page for more information), the Drainage District must investigate the current condition of the levee system. To do this, staff and engineering consultants are compiling existing information and gathering new data on the current condition of the levee system. This information will be used to identify possible deficiencies.The first step in the investigation is to conduct an above ground survey of the the levee systems, and identify all structures and vegetation within the levee right of way. This effort has been completed for PEN 1 and PEN 2. The next step is to explore the conditions of the levees beneath the surface. To do this, the Drainage District must drill boreholes and remove soil samples at periodic intervals along the levee system, in some cases within the levee itself and in others on nearby land.

The geotechnical engineering consultants that will be evaluating the levee for accreditation have identified around 135 proposed boring locations in the PEN 1 and PEN 2 districts. At these locations, a drilling contractor will drill holes less than 8 inches in diameter, from 25 to 100 feet deep. The proposed drilling work falls within public rights of way and on private property. The Districts will enter into access agreements or obtain permits with each impacted property owner or easement holder before beginning work.

Levee Herbicide Application Planned for Tuesday, October 15th

The Multnomah County Drainage District No. 1 is planning to apply an herbicide (Garlon 3A) on Tuesday, October 15th (weather permitting) to help control the growth of invasive weeds on the levee.Peninsula Drainage District No.2 will post notification signs 48 hours prior to the herbicide application. Signs will be removed 48 hours after the herbicide application has been completed. Garlon 3A is an herbicide registered by EPA (registration # 62719-37) to be used adjacent to waterways.

Columbia Slough Watershed Council press release

The Columbia Slough Regatta, the largest one-day paddle in Oregon, returns for its 19th anniversary on Sunday, July 28th from 9 am to 1 pm. This annual celebration of the Columbia Slough highlights recreation opportunities on this hidden gem of local waterways, and draws more than 400 participants for a morning of free paddling and fun.This year's Regatta launches from the Multnomah County Drainage District Launch on 1880 NE Elrod Dr Portland, OR 97211. Paddlers will travel east along the slough, home to great blue herons, river otters, beavers and more! On land, participants will have a chance to view Portland's' cross levee system in action and learn how flood protection works in this area. Before and after paddling, participants can visit with local water and nature-based organizations and enjoy hands-on family activities. Free t-shirts and refreshments will be provided while supplies last.

Complimentary 45-minute canoe and kayak rentals are available through the Council, but advanced registration is required at www.columbiaslough.org. Life jackets and paddles are included with these rentals, which tend to fill up weeks in advance. Participants with their own human-powered watercraft and safety equipment are welcome to come without reservations, and crews will be available to help unload and transport boats. The suggested donation of $8 per person supports the Columbia Slough Watershed Council's programs and events.

"The Regatta is a celebration I look forward to each year," said Susan Barthel, a long-time supporter of the Columbia Slough. "It's amazing how much free outdoor fun we have in the city!"

The Columbia Slough Watershed Council is a diverse group of neighbors, property owners, businesses, environmental advocates, recreation activists, and government agencies representatives. Its mission is: "to foster action to protect, enhance, restore and revitalize the Columbia Slough and its watershed."
