Neighborhood Watch meeting notes for 5/23/16, Cagney & Lacey Group. (Updates to the meeting notes are in italics.) Mark Wells, Crime Prevention Coordinator for Portland, gave us guidelines and suggestions for helping to make our neighborhood safer. Keeping our cars "dealership clean," locked and alarmed with no visible items to tempt a thief or vandal. Take a home inventory to include valuables (take pictures,) record computer serial numbers, etc. so stolen items may be traced. Put data in a plastic bag, store the bag in your freezer. Also put photos of data on your phone. https://www.portlandoregon.gov/police/article/105272 Mayor's Homelessness tool kit is available at https://www.portlandoregon.gov/toolkit/ Crime Prevention Coordinators can visit homes to do security assessments. Their focus is crime prevention through environmental design. Our Crime Prevention Coordinator is Mike Boyer, who can be reached at 503-823-4094 michael.boyer@portlandoregon. Kim Swensen volunteered to handle signage for our group. (Signs kindly paid for by Bridgeton Neighborhood Association.) Blue and white Neighborhood Watch signs are now up at both ends of our area. Randy and Gus have been working on the street lighting to improve night visibility on Bridgeton and some of the parking areas. To date, we have had a couple of visits from City employees who determined that one extra light was needed. That street light has been installed on the south east corner of Gantenbein and Bridgeton. We are now waiting for PP&L to give it juice! Several trees have been trimmed and lighting improvements continue on Wayne's Moorage. Improved lighting will brighten the parking area to discourage car break-ins. Other moorage owners have been asked to improve lighting in their parking lots and they agreed to do so. We also discussed emergency preparedness and the need for more NET (Neighborhood Emergency Team) volunteers on Bridgeton. For more information on NET training, go to portlandoregon.gov/net Current thinking is that in case of a disaster, we each need to be self sufficient for 3 to 4 weeks. The Red Cross has lots of information on emergency preparedness. Mark stressed the importance of reporting all crimes. Crime reports are logged and tracked by area. Increased reporting can result in increased police patrols in the neighborhood. To report crimes in progress call 911. For suspicious activity, call Portland Police NON EMERGENCY 503-823-333 To make an online Crime Report www.portlandoregon.gov/police/cor In the future, we will post notes on: www.livebridgeton.com/neighborhood-watch (the Bridgeton Neighborhood Association website.) Our goal is to have a safe neighborhood. Please join and help us achieve this. Thank you! Sharon Drew and Cherry Ann
